Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 427
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dime in Very Good. Sharpness of VG-7 but repaired. The right obverse and corresponding portion of the reverse have been repaired with many devices affected. Toned a brownish silver color in the fields, the devices are lighter in color. A coin that should be inspected by prospective buyers. Rare as the first year of the regular issue, and one of the Philadelphia Mint's first silver coins struck, as the Silver dollars were produced late in the year. The Half Dime and Half Dollar were the only other silver produced in 1794.

Lot 428
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime. EF-40. A scarce type coin that boasts silvery-gray color and crisp striking details. The reverse has some stray adjustment marks on the eagle. Another curious feature is a small mint caused planchet clip near stars three and four on the obverse and corresponding area on the reverse. The color ranges from gray to some hints of blue in the fields.

Lot 429
1796 Draped Bust Half Dime. VF-20. Better than the usually seen disaster for this scarce type coin. The surfaces are free of the oft-seen scratches or other problems. This is not to say that the coin is perfect, it has the normal surfaces for a circulated coin of the period, with color that appears original. Years of experience tell us that this two year type coin is one of the most difficult to find in high grade, few were hoarded or saved, and most survivors show varying degrees of scratches or other problems. Not so here, the strike is full and complete, and both sides show the faint details of the higher die work of the engraver.

Lot 430
1796 Draped Bust Half Dime. Sharpness of VG-7 but cleaned and repaired. There is a raised lump on the edge over ER of LIBERTY where the coin has been repaired, neither wisely nor well. Other surface problems exist, but the coin does have an original appearance with medium-gray color and most of the device detail is present. In comparison with the other 1796 Half Dime in this sale, this is much more typical what collectors encounter for this type coin. Inspection mandatory.

Lot 431
1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. Sharpness of VF-20 but bent and scratched. As all too often seen, this early Half Dime has numerous surface marks and appears to have been lost in a street for a day or two and suffered various indignities on both sides. Nice color and at arms length appears normal, but under a glass a peppering of surface marks appear, mostly on Liberty and the eagle. Another coin that requires inspection.

Lot 432
1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. 15 stars. Sharpness of Fine-12 damaged and cleaned. The surfaces show numerous signs of contact and even some areas of repair around Liberty's face. Adjustment marks are noted on the obverse, with a few more on the reverse. As too often seen, a coin with numerous problems. Inspection mandatory.

Lot 433
1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. 15 stars. About Good-3. The head of Liberty has been re-engraved around her face and upper curls. Most of the design details are present, but some peripheral devices have been worn down to the rim. A glass notes myriad scratches on the obverse, but they are old and toned over. A filler that must be inspected by bidders.

Lot 434
1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. Sharpness of AU-50 but expertly plugged at E of LIBERTY. A coin that deserves a careful look, the surfaces are very choice, with a deep-gray color and show few signs of contact. However, the E of LIBERTY has been very expertly re-engraved, and this fact is not readily discernible. What gives the repair away is the reverse just below the ribbon bow there is a neat little circle where a nice little hole was filled. Some file marks are noted on the surrounding dentils of the reverse. Nevertheless, this coin has a wonderful original appearance, and not many collectors would ever find this artfully re-engraved repair work.
Later die state with cracks through ED of UNITED.

1800 Draped Bust Half Dime. VF-20. Lightly cleaned to a silvery-gray and starting to retone with russet hues on the reverse. Virtually full curls on Liberty and this coin is definitely undergraded. The reverse is also well struck, with all feathers present and accounted for on the eagle, the motto sharp and complete, only a single star or two above the eagle is weak. Perfect for the type collector.

Lot 436
1800 Draped Bust Half Dime. "LIBEKTY" error. VG-8. The obverse is nice for the grade, with lovely peripheral toning and all devices present. On the reverse, the center is very weak, with most of the stars above the eagle flatly struck and that area shows minor surface scratches.

Lot 437
1801 Draped Bust Half Dime. Good-5. Toned a lovely gray at the centers, darker at the periphery. A glass notes a smattering of tick marks where this coin must have spent a day or two in a dusty Philadelphia street being trampled by horses and wagons. For reasons that aren't clear, a huge percentage of these early half dimes look just like this, with pebbly surfaces from circulation damage. Another coin that should be inspected.
Recent research shows that both Valentine-1 and Valentine-2 were the same obverse dies, on this so-called Valentine-2 there is a short die break under the bust.

1803 Draped Bust Half Dime. Large 8. Fine-15. A coin that is much better than the grade assigned, Liberty's hair is sharp all the up to the highest curls, and the eagle has most of its proud feathers. Evenly toned a soft gray color, and pleasing in every way. Scarce.

Lot 439
1805 Draped Bust Half Dime. Sharpness of Fine-12 but cleaned. A tough date in the half dime series. This particular coin was probably cleaned long ago and now is retoned a dark-gray color. There are some short scratches on both sides, as usually seen on these tiny coins. Well struck on Liberty's curls, but her bust is flat as always seen on coins of this date, the drapery lines did not strike up whatsoever and Liberty's ampleness is not well defined.

1835 Capped Bust Half Dime. MS-63. A beautiful coin that boasts golden and blue hues throughout and mirror fields. Probably from a small hoard which appeared years ago, these capped bust half dimes would be extremely rare in mint state were it not for that hoard disbursed in 1969 by Q. David Bowers. It is reported that approximately 100 coins were found in this hoard.

1835 Capped Bust Half Dime. Small date and 5c. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely blue iridescence with a silvery pink color on Liberty's bust, and well struck all over (these tiny silver coins are notorious for being soft in appearance, so finding a crisp one like this is unusual). Some abrasions under the color. Lighter color on the very highest points.

1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Large date. Sharpness of EF-40 but obverse initial. What a tragedy, this coin is a gorgeous original slider that some knuckle-head carved his initial "E" in the right obverse field. Still a scarce type coin and would be wonderful to display reverse side up.
